DUBUQUE COMMUNITY Y SWIM LESSON LEVELS

Below is a description of all of the levels that are offered at the Y in the Aquatics Department for Swim Lessons. If you have further questions in regards to which level your child(ren) belong, please feel free to contact the Aquatics Director, Crista Koch.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (6-36 months)
(1 instructor to every 6 participants)

Parent Tot (6-24 months)

The primary objective of the Parent-Tot Class is to familiarize both the parent and child to the water environment. The class will be taught in a variety of ways; songs will be song, games will be played, and skills will be introduced. The activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. The goal of this class is to create a fun and engaging, learning environment for both the parent and the child.

Perch (18-36 months)

The primary objective of the Perch Class is to continue to familiarize both the parent and child to the water while incorporating more water skills and preparing the child to move into the first preschool class without a parent. The class will be taught in a variety of ways; songs will be song, games will be played, and skills will be introduced. The activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. The goal of this class is to get the child comfortable for the first preschool class.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (3-5 years)
(1 instructor to every 4 participants)

Pike

The primary objective of the Pike Class is to help children develop safe pool behaviors, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. This class is designed for new swimmers who are ready to be in a group class. Participants will learn basic strokes, such as the front and back crawl. They will learn how to float, kick, jump in, and go under water.

Eel

The primary objective of the Eel Class is to continue to familiarize the child with the skills learned from the pike class. They will be introduced to other skills and will swim farther distances. Children should be able to swim across the little pool without assistance by the end of this level.

Ray

The primary objective of the Ray Class is to get the child familiar with the big pool and to improve upon skills learned in the Pike and Eel Classes. At this level children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, learn personal safety and rescue skills and build endurance. Children will learn to tread water and to dive.

Starfish

The primary objective of the Starfish Class is to advance the children farther distances in the water with the skills that they learned in the Ray Class. Children will review previously learned skills and refine their strokes. Children should be able to swim a half the length of the big pool on their front and back at the end of this level.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS (6 and older)
(1 instructor to every 5 participants)

Polliwog I

The primary objective of the Polliwog I Class is to familiarize the beginner school-aged (6-9) children. It gets children acquainted with the pool because they may not have had lessons before. Children will work on bobs, floating, swimming on their front and back, jumping in and treading water.

Guppy I

The primary objective of the Guppy I Class is to continue to practice and build upon basic skills. All the skills taught up to this level will be worked on and endurance will become more of a focus. Safety skills will also be taught.

Guppy II

The primary objective of the Guppy II Class will be to continue to work on the basic skills and to focus more on the elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke. This course will also continue with safety skills.

Polliwog II

The primary objective of the Polliwog II Class is to familiarize the beginner school-aged (9-12) children. It gets children acquainted with the pool because they may not have had lessons before. Children will work on bobs, floating, swimming on their front and back, jumping in and treading water.

Minnow

The primary objective of the Minnow Class is to improve the child’s strokes and to build endurance. This is the initial intermediate level.

Fish

The primary objective of the Fish Class is to refine strokes and increase endurance. This is more of an advanced intermediate level. Participants will continue to learn more new skills and strokes.

Flying Fish

The primary objective of the Flying Fish Class is for children to work on refining their strokes with a strong emphasis on increasing their endurance. They develop the ability to perform all strokes with open turns and continue to learn new strokes.

Shark

The primary objective of the Shark Class is to continue to improve strokes beginning with appropriate starts and turns. Participants are introduced to circle swimming and other lifelong skills used for in the water.

Swim Club

The primary objective of the Swim Club is to build endurance. Participants must have passed out of the Shark Class in order to become a member of the swim club. Participants will use all of the skills learned throughout the program to build on their personal abilities. Swim club can ultimately lead up to Swim Team.

Adult Lessons
(1 instructor to every 5 participants)

Adult

The primary objective of an adult lesson is to reach the goals of each adult in the class. The class is flexible as the instructor will work with you to reach the goals you want to achieve throughout the lessons. Any level of experience is welcome to join the adult class.


LEARN TO SWIM" PROGRAM

The Dubuque Community Y is offering a “Learn to Swim” program to first and/or second graders in Dubuque Community School System. If you are interested in learning more about the “Learn to Swim” program, contact Crista Koch, Aquatics Director, at 563.556.3371 or cristakoch@dubuquey.org.

"This program is intended to get students acquainted and comfortable in the water atmosphere, to learn and develop some primary skills, and to become familiar with water safety while learning in a fun and safe environment," said Crista Koch, Aquatics Director at the Dubuque Community Y. "The students love to come to the Y and have a great experience in the water."

Coach's Philosophy

The Dubuque Dolphin Swim Team Coaches are here to develop and help build the swimming technique of all participants in an atmosphere of fun. They are to serve as a stepping stone from 'learn to swim' programs into competitive swimming, maintaining swimmers' interest and fostering quality technique and a lifelong participation in the sport.

The Dubuque Dolphin Swim Team is a competitive program that focuses on all the strokes to promote a life long activity that stresses goals and the four core values; caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility, of the Dubuque Community Y. The participants will feel a sense of team belonging which will help them develop good leadership skills, self-esteem, and individual successes.
